What is happiness ? Its a subjective concept and is different for everyone. Some one might be happy today after getting their dream job. However after some time realize that its not something which makes the person happy. Hence is back to being sad again.
Someone might be very sad with life and believe that life has been very unfair, but there are hundreds of people who would be very happy to swap their life with the above person. E.g. someone is unhappy because they have a small home, however there are millions of people who don’t have a home and would be very happy to grab the small home. The irony is that once this person gets the home, they would become unhappy again and wish for something more in life.
Have you ever thought why are we unhappy? We all are doing something or the other to get that “thing” which would make us happy. Even if we get it, after certain time has passed, we would be sad again.
One who can observe life closely would understand it that happiness and sadness are cycles of life. You can only be as happy as you are sad. E.g. If you get an email in the night that you are fired from the job. The whole night you would be really sad. Various thoughts would come to your mind that my life is of no use now, how would I pay my bills, how would I feed the family etc. Now there is a second email in the morning, ignore the previous email, it was sent out by mistake. Now how happy will you be ? Aren’t you as happy as you were sad ? Isn’t it true that because you were sad, you are happy now. How happy you are is equal to how sad you were.
If you had an attitude in the above example that its ok, I can find another job and would not have been mentally impacted by this email then you won’t be sad on the first email, and happy after the second one.
There is one way to be happy. Always have a “higher goal” in the life and don’t be impacted by other things which keep on happening in the background. Have a higher mission in life, be involved in that mission so much that it does not matter whether you have a small home, no home, large home, a job, no job, a business etc. This way you wont be sad if you loose or don’t have any of these and wont be happy by gaining any of these. Your goal is beyond all these things.
Ofcourse you need a job, home etc but they are not the end goal of the life. They are just a means to reach to the end goal. What is that “higher goal” is a topic for another day
