The best thing I do for myself costs nothing. I just don’t fill the gap.
An evening with nothing in it. No plans, nothing that needs me. And instead of reaching for the phone, I leave it there. Ten minutes, maybe twenty. Nothing spiritual about it. I’m just not spending the bandwidth.
That’s when the questions arrive. They always do, once there’s room.
Why am I running?
That’s the one that keeps coming back. Not running from something — just the running itself. Because I am. All the time.
A better job. A better house. Better for the kids. Each one is reasonable on its own. Line them up and they say something else: a better version of me. Always the better version, always a little ahead, never the one actually standing here.
When did it turn into defence?
Here’s the part I didn’t expect.
I’m not chasing. I’m defending. The work, the home, what people think of me — I’m in protective mode around all of it. Braced. Watching the edges. Something could take it.
A sand castle
You’ve seen a kid build one. Digs the moat, packs the walls, gets the towers right.
Then the water starts coming in and they stand in front of it with their arms out.
That’s me. I built the thing myself, out of material I know doesn’t hold, on a beach where the tide comes in twice a day — and there I am with my arms out.
So what changes
Not much, honestly. The castle is still there. I’m still guarding it.
But something shifts when you can see the beach. The tide stops being an attack. It’s just the tide. It was always coming, and it isn’t personal.
And you can build without the bracing. Same castle, same hands. Just not standing in front of it the whole time, waiting for the water.
Distraction is what stops you noticing any of this. That’s the only reason I leave the gap empty. Not to get calm. Just to stay in the room long enough for the question to turn up.
