Insecurities: Our own shadow

We all have insecurities. From the time we’re tiny babies, these feelings are with us. For instance, picture a baby. When their mother spends time with another child, the baby might cry or try to get attention. They might not understand why they’re not the center of attention anymore. They feel left out and want to be close to their mother again. This simple feeling of wanting to be noticed and loved is something we all carry with us as we grow.

As we get older, many things can make us feel insecure. The desire to have the newest phone, the pressure to get a good degree, or the hope of finding a good job can be sources of stress. And then there’s the wish to find the perfect partner or to always look our best. All these feelings can make us doubt ourselves and wonder if we’re good enough.

Social media adds another layer to this. Every like, comment, or share can make us feel good or bad. Sometimes, scrolling through our feeds, it feels like these apps are showing us what we’re missing out on, rather than what we have.

When we’re worried or scared, many of us turn to prayer, hoping for better days, a better job, or for our loved ones to be safe and healthy. Our minds, interestingly, have a way of jumping to the worst conclusions. For example, imagine lying in bed at night and hearing a faint noise from the living room. Instead of thinking it might be the wind or a pet, our first thought might be, “Is there an intruder?” Even if it’s just a creaky floorboard or a window tapping, our insecurities and fears can make us think of the scariest possibilities.

But it’s essential to remember that feeling a bit insecure from time to time is normal. It’s when these feelings start to control our actions and decisions that they become a problem.

Some parents, out of worry, might buy too many gadgets to watch over their child. Or a student might study all the time, forgetting to relax, play, or hang out with friends. In trying to chase away our insecurities, we might miss out on the simple joys of life.

Insecurities are like our shadows. They’re always there, following us. But, just like shadows, they aren’t solid or real. They don’t define who we are or our worth. It’s okay to know they’re there, but it’s also important not to let them take over our lives.

In conclusion, life is full of ups and downs, and insecurities are a part of the journey. But instead of letting them weigh us down, we should remember that everyone has these feelings at times. By understanding and managing them, we can ensure that they remain just small shadows and don’t become big obstacles in our lives.
