Spirituality simply means choosing what’s right. The precursor to spirituality is understanding what you can call right. The precursor to what you can call right is understanding yourself.
Understanding yourself is simply called self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is about knowing yourself, or simply put, knowing the self.
To know the self, you need introspection. To introspect, you need a stable mind that does not wander much. You also need to ask questions to yourself. Knowledge comes when you ask questions. Questions can be:
- Why did I get angry?
- Why did I think so much about a person just from their look or smell?
- Why and when did I start judging the person?
The list can go on and on. Once you ask these questions, you will realize that most of your thoughts and emotions are not even yours. They come and go; you might feel angry, and then something pleasant happens, and you forget you were angry. Something pleasant is happening, and then something bad or unexpected occurs, and you start getting angry.
I can give you many examples, but it will be fruitful only when you understand the above and try to find examples from your own life. Spirituality is harsh and ruthless, and you need to make the right choices for yourself. All the textbooks can show you the way, but your spirituality has to illuminate that way so that you can walk on it.
No one can illuminate the path for you. Start questioning yourself and try to reduce the number of things you have added to your life. Keep only the essential things. Treat your time as a supreme resource.
The neo-spirituality gives us some tricks like watching the breath. Once you can watch the breath for some time, then start watching your actions and thoughts and begin asking questions about them. Don’t be stuck in watching the breath for years and years. The first six months of watching the breath is okay, but then gradually move on to the real deal, which is watching the self.
Hope you find your path.
