JFK rideshare pickup has moved — check your terminal before you land. Terminal 4 is curbside on the Arrivals level in Zone B, except between 12 PM and 2 AM, when it’s a shuttle to a designated lot — and a 7:30 PM arrival falls inside that window. Terminals 5 and 7 now require the AirTrain to Howard Beach and a free shuttle to the pickup lot, adding 10–20 minutes. Terminals 1 and 8 follow the “Ride App” signage on the arrivals level. The AirTrain is free within the airport. ADA-accessible rideshares still pick up at the front of the terminal.

The departure is the biggest risk of the trip. Times Square to JFK on an August Thursday afternoon is the worst outbound window of the week — the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, the LIE and the Van Wyck all peak together. Expect 70–95 minutes, with a tail to two hours.
This is the one ride to reserve rather than hail. Book Uber Reserve a day or two out and pick XL, not X — three people plus a week of luggage will not fit an UberX, and discovering that at 4:15 on a Thursday costs you the flight. Reserve also locks the price against surge, which on a summer Thursday airport run is not a small thing. Keep a second Uber ready to hail as a fallback: driver cancellations during an airport surge run 10–20%.
At checkout that morning: get a bag-hold claim ticket, confirm the bell desk is staffed past 5 PM, and confirm any per-bag fee. The desk gets a rush from 4:00–4:30, so allow ten extra minutes.
Things nobody tells you
- Battery Park scam: hawkers in official-looking vests will tell you the island is closed or the ferry is sold out. The only legitimate sellers are statuecitycruises.com, 877-523-9849, and the windows inside Castle Clinton.
- The Statue security building moved in March 2026 — it’s on the Battery waterfront directly behind Castle Clinton now. Older maps point elsewhere.
- No lockers at Battery Park screening. Maximum bag 24.2″ × 17.9″. Pack light.
- Cell service is spotty on Liberty Island — agree a physical meeting point the moment you step off the ferry.
- Top of the Rock has no re-entry.
- Times Square costumed characters will pose with your kid and then demand payment. Say no before the photo, not after.
- Skip the pedicabs. NYC doesn’t regulate their fares at all — $3 to $9 per minute, per pedicab.
- Use XL, not X, whenever you have all three plus bags. On the airport legs it’s the difference between fitting and not.
- You can’t drive into Central Park — it’s been car-free since 2018. Tuesday’s drop at 5th & E 76th is the real one.
- Wednesday’s ferry return time is unpredictable, so don’t pre-plan that pickup. Hail from Battery Place when you’re actually walking out.
- Restaurant Week runs Jul 20–Aug 16 on weekdays, which tightens tables citywide. Book any extra dinners ahead.
- Sunsets: Mon 8:09 · Tue 8:08 · Wed 8:07 · Thu 8:06 PM.
- Coming from Pacific time, lean late. Evenings are free money — Top of the Rock at 10:15 PM is 7:15 body time and will be the easiest thing on the schedule. Mornings are the fight. Tuesday is the adaptation day, which is what makes Wednesday workable.
Backup: Times Square to JFK by train
Keep this in your pocket for Thursday. If the traffic map looks ugly at 4 PM, the LIRR is the fastest and most predictable way to JFK — and the reason isn’t speed, it’s that rail bypasses the Van Wyck Expressway entirely. The Van Wyck is exactly what turns a 70-minute drive into a two-hour one. A train cannot sit in that.

Door to terminal: roughly 45–55 minutes, and it barely varies with traffic.
Use Moynihan, not old Penn. They’re the same station — Moynihan is a newer hall across 8th Ave sharing the same platforms, connected underneath. Old Penn is a cramped warren; Moynihan is a big skylit room with seating, and it reaches LIRR tracks 13–21 by elevator as well as escalator, which is what you want with a week of luggage.
You don’t need a specific train, with one exception. Nearly every eastbound LIRR stops at Jamaica — Babylon, Hempstead, Ronkonkoma, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Huntington all do. The Port Washington branch is the only one that skips it, splitting off earlier via Woodside. So read the destination on the board, avoid Port Washington, and take whatever’s next.
That’s what defuses Penn’s one genuinely stressful habit: the platform number isn’t posted until about five minutes before departure, so crowds stand watching a screen and then rush a single staircase together. You can ignore all of it. You’re not fighting for a particular departure — you’re taking the next one, and at that hour they’re constant.
The honest trade-off: this is the reliable option, not the comfortable one. Thursday at 4:30 is peak — it’ll be loud, crowded and standing-room, with a transfer at Jamaica. But nothing here can be missed, which is the opposite of a car on the Van Wyck. If the ride app is quoting anything near 90 minutes, walk to Penn instead.
Paying for it
Half of this works like BART, half doesn’t — and the half that doesn’t carries an $8-a-head penalty if you get it wrong.

⚠️ Activate on the platform, before you step onto the train. Since January 2026 the surcharge applies to activating onboard, not just buying onboard — so buying in the app and then hitting activate once you’re seated costs the same as having no ticket. There’s no reason to wait anyway: validity runs from purchase, not activation.
- One phone covers all three of you. Buy three tickets, activate each, and swipe through them for the conductor. Nobody else needs the app.
- Buy on Thursday itself — a mobile one-way expires at 4 AM the day after purchase, so tickets bought earlier in the week will be dead before you travel.
- A ticket can’t be un-activated once activated.
- Install TrainTime before the trip. Creating an account on a crowded platform with luggage and a kid is not the moment.
Don’t be tempted to Uber to Jamaica and pick up the AirTrain there. Jamaica is about 15 of the 17 miles to the airport, so you’d still sit through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the LIE — the Long Island getaway route, and the worst of the three — and only skip the Van Wyck at the end, while adding a luggage transfer. The train works because it avoids all three.
